Sessue Hayakawa was born on June 10, 1889 in Chiba, Japan. Sessue Hayakawa died on November 23, 1973 in Tokyo. His last motion picture on file dates from 1958.
Biographical Notes in German: Bevor Sessue Hayakawa als japanischer Lagerkommandant in David Lean's BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI eine OSCAR-Nomnierung für die beste Neberolle erhielt, konnte er bereits auf eine lange Karriere im amerikanischen Film zurückblicken.
Als Kintaro Hayakawa 1890 in Nanawa geboren, sollte Hayakawa erst eine Karriere bei der japanischen Marine einschlagen, studierte dann aber an der Universität in Chicago und kam in Los Angeles durch Thomas H. Ince zum Film.
TYPHOON (1914) machte ihn zum Star, Hayakawas Rollen wurden typischerweise dunkle asiatische Bösewichte, im Stil oft vom klassischen japanischen Theater beeinflusst. Zusammen mit seiner Frau und Schauspielerin Tsuru Aoki bildete er eine eigene Produktionsfirma, Haworth Pictures, die in den frühen Zwanziger Jahren eine grössere Zahl Filme produzierte.
Anna May Wong war Sessue Hayawakas Partnerin in dessen Tonfilmdebüt DAUGHTER OF THE DRAGON (1931), im Zweiten Weltkrieg tauchte Hayakawa im besetzten Frankreich unter und kehrte erst Ende der Vierziger Jahre in die USA zurück. Seine Memoiren erschienen 1960 unter dem Titel ZEN SHOWED ME THE WAY.
