Synopsis in German
Ausgerechnet am Sonntagnachmittag erhält der Zahnarzt Biff Grimes (James Cagney) einen Notruf. Sein Jugendfreund Hugo Barnstead (Jack Carson) hat Zahnschmerzen. Der Name weckt ungute Erinnerungen an die gemeinsame Vergangenheit. Biff war in die hübsche Virginia Brush (Rita Hayworth) verliebt. Als sie zu einem Rendezvous nicht erschien, musste Biff erfahren, dass sie inzwischen Hugo geheiratet hatte. Jahre später verschaffte Hugo seinem alten Freund einen Job als Geschäftsführer in seiner gut gehenden Baufirma. Doch als dort bei einem Unfall Biffs Vater zu Tode kam, wurde Biff als Leiter der Firma für Schlampereien verantwortlich gemacht, die Hugo auf dem Gewissen hatte. Biff wanderte für die besten Jahre seines Lebens hinter Gitter, während Hugo ungeschoren davonkam und bald zum Stadtrat ernannt wurde. Doch als Hugo nun hilflos wimmernd auf Biffs Zahnarztstuhl sitzt, vergeht diesem die Lust auf Rache. Trotz seines Reichtums scheint Hugo ziemlich heruntergekommen und ein psychisches Wrack zu sein. Virginia hat sich über die Jahre zur Furie entwickelt, die von allem enttäuscht ist und Hugo Tag und Nacht zusetzt. Mit leiser Genugtuung registriert Biff, dass Hugo vom Leben bereits genug bestraft wurde.... (ARD Presse)
