Biographie en Allemand (en Allemand): John Kani is an actor, a director and a playwright. He has won Broadway's Tony Award for the Best Actor 1974/75, The AA Life Vita Award for MY CHILDREN! MY ARICA!, a Tacrima Golden Award at the Milan International Film Festival for SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE PALACE, and South African an Amerivan Awards for Television commercials.
John was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in MY CHILDREN! MY AFRICA! at the Royal National Theatre and for an Evening Standard Award for THE ISLAND. The National African Federated Chamber of Commerce awarded John a Merit Award for his contribution to the advancement of culture in South Africa and at the 1993/94 National Vita Awards, John was awarded the Moyra Fine Award for outstanding contribution to theatrical life. John is the Executive Director of the Market Theatre as well as a Trustee of the Market Theatre and Director of the Laboratory. He has been the Associate Artistic Director of the Market Theatre in Johannesburg since 1987.
John's numerous performances at the Market Theatre include THE BLOOD KNOT, DRIVING MISS DAISY, OTHELLO, SIZWE BANZI IS DEAD, THE ISLAND, WAITING FOR GODOT, MASTER HAROLD AND THE BOYS and hiis award-winning performance in MY CHILDREN! MY AFRICA! - The latter five John also performed in London.
Most recently John has appeared at the Market Theatre in DUET FOR ONE, THE LION AND THE LAMB and PLAYLAND, the latter having had a highly successful season at the Donmar Warehouse in London, and a four month tour of Australia and New Zealand. John has also directed GOREE, BLUES AFRICA BLUES, KAGOOS and THE MEETING at the Market Theatre.
John Kani has also appeared in numerous South African and international films. He is very active in the political life of the New South Africa and is a member of the parliment. Among other activities John Kani was the host for the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as President.
