«Humphrey Bogart: Das war alles andere als eine Bilderbuchkarriere. Das Universitätsstudium endet vorzeitig wegen Disziplinlosigkeit, während seiner Zeit in der US-Navy zog er sich eine Verletzung der Oberlippe zu (die Jahrzehnte später bedeutungsvoll werden sollte), die Arbeit beim Theater seit den zwanziger Jahren und in Hollywood seit 1930 brachte keinen rechten Erfolg, aufwärts ging es erst 1936 mit 'The Petrified Forest', und erst 1941 beginnt mit 'High Sierra' die Reihe jener Filme, die den nicht enden wollenden Nachruhm begründet haben.
