Conrad Veidt was born on January 22, 1893 in Berlin. He was a German Actor, known for Casablanca (1942), Das Indische Grabmal: Die Sendung des Yoghi (1921), Die andere Seite (1931), Conrad Veidt's first movie on record is from 1916. Conrad Veidt died on April 3, 1943 in Hollywood, California, USA. His last motion picture on file dates from 1958.
Biographical Notes in German: Schauspieler des deutschen, englischen und amerikanischen Films, Hohenzollerngymnasium, Statist und Zögling der Reinhardt- Theater- Schauspielschule, dann Deutsches Theater Berlin. Conrad Veidts Filmdebüt erfolgte 1915 mit "Das Rätsel von Bagalore", durch seine Rollen in den expressionistischen Stummfilmen wurde Veidt dann rasch weltbekannt: "Das Wachsfigurenkabinett", "Orlacs Hände" aber vor allem "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" prägten ihn als "Dämon der Leinwand."
Bereits Mitte der Zwanziger Jahre hatte Veidt ein kurzes Gastspiel in Hollywood, 1929 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück, wo ihm mühelos der Anschluss im Tonfilm gelang. Nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten emigrierte Conrad Veidt nach England, spielt dort neben der Titelrolle in "Jew Suess" Parts in Abenteuer- und Agentenfilme. "Der Dieb von Bagdad", mit drei Oscars ausgezeichnet, wurde sein erster und einziger Farbfilm.
In einem seiner letzten Filme blieb Veidt vor allem durch seine Darstellung als deutscher Nazioffizier in Erinnerung: es war "Casablanca". Wenig später starb er 1943 während eines Golfspiels in Hollywood, gerade fünfzig jährig. (lhg 2011)
