King Vidor was born on February 8, 1894 in Galveston, Texas, US. He was an American Director, Author, Producer, known for Hallelujah (1929), Duel in the Sun (1946), The Wizard of Oz (1939), King Vidor's first movie on record is from 1913. He was married to Florence Vidor (1915-1924), Eleanor Boardman (1926-1933) and Elizabeth Hill (1937-1982). King Vidor died on November 1, 1982 in Paso Robles, California, USA. His last motion picture on file dates from 1981.
Biographical Notes in German: King Vidor, am 8. Februar 1894 als Sohn eines wohlhabenden texanischen Fabrikanten in Galveston zur Welt gekommen, sollte nach dem Willen des Vaters Ingenieur werden. Doch Vidor entschied sich anders. Als Bildreporter fing er an, arbeitete in den verschiedensten Filmsparten in Hollywood, bis er 1919 seinen ersten eigenen Spielfilm inszenieren konnte. Schon früh zeigte sich sein ausgeprägter Sinn für visuelle Effekte. Mit dem souverän inszenierten Antikriegsfilm "The Big Parade" erlebte er 1925 seinen endgültigen Durchbruch. 1928 schuf er mit "The Crowd" ("Ein Mensch der Masse") einen der wenigen Hollywood-Filme jener Zeit, die sich mit der bitteren Realität des "american way of life" auseinander setzten. 1930 schrieb er Filmgeschichte mit "Hallelujah", einem der frühesten Musicals und dem ersten Tonfilm mit schwarzer Besetzung. Zu seinen Triumphen auf dem Gebiet des opulenten Hollywood-Kinos gehören die großen Dramen leidenschaftlicher Gefühle "Duell in der Sonne" (1946) und "Wildes Blut" (1952), der Kirk-Douglas-Western "Mit stahlharter Faust" und last, not least die epische Tolstoi-Verfilmung "Krieg und Frieden" (1956) mit Audrey Hepburn und Mel Ferrer.
Fünfmal wurde Vidor für den Regie-Oscar nominiert - für "Ein Mensch der Masse" (1928), für "Hallelujah" (1930), für "Der Champ" (1931) mit Wallace Beery, der den Oscar als bester Hauptdarsteller gewann, für "Die Zitadelle" (1938) und für "Krieg und Frieden" (1956). Gewonnen hat er ihn nie, dafür aber wurde er 1979 mit einem Spezial-Oscar für seine besonderen Verdienste um den Film bedacht. Übrigens: Er verbuchte einen Eintrag ins Guinnessbuch der Rekorde als der Regisseur mit der längsten Karriere. Sie dauerte 67 Jahre, startete 1913 mit dem Stummfilm "Hurricane in Galveston" (bei dem 1900 Tausende starben, Vidor überlebte ihn wie durch ein Wunder) und endete 1980 mit dem Dokumentarfilm "The Metaphor".
