Nach der dokumentarischen "Geschichte der Revolution" (1961) nahm er deren Negativfolgen wie Bürokratie und sozialistischen Realismus satirisch aufs Korn ("Die zwölf Stühle", 1962, "Der Tod eines Bürokraten", 1966).
