Biografia in Tedesco (in Tedesco): "Er spielte sich in knapp drei Jahrzehnten mit seinem Ausdrucksreichtum und seiner Vielfältigkeit zum Weltstar - war gleichermaßen als Bühnen- und Filmschauspieler erfolgreich. Diesen Aufstieg hatte er seiner Energie und seinem Lehrer Philip Burton zu verdanken. Der erkannte den Lebenshunger und das Talent des Richard Walter Jenkins jr., eines von 13 Kindern einer walisischen Bergarbeiterfamilie. Dankbar nahm Richard später den Namen seines Mentors an. Dem Studium in Oxford folgten mit 19 das Bühnen-, mit 23 das Film- und mit 27 das Hollywood-Debüt ("Meine Cousine Rachel"), das ihm gleich die erste von sieben Oscar-Nominierungen brachte. Das Jahr 1962 wurde für Burton zum Schicksalsjahr. Erstmals stand er mit der "schönsten Frau der Welt", Elizabeth Taylor, für das Monumentalepos "Cleopatra" vor der Kamera und verliebte sich leidenschaftlich. Der Film untermauerte seinen Starruhm, doch privat geriet der bislang von Skandalen verschonte Star in einen unglaublichen, über ein Jahrzehnt andauernden Publicity-Wirbel. Burton und Taylor hatten sich scheiden lassen und wieder geheiratet, doch ihr Berufs- und Privatleben war von da an stets von Eifersuchtsszenen und Skandalen überschattet. Zum künstlerischen Höhepunkt beider wurde der Film "Wer hat Angst vor Virginia Woolf?" (1966) - wer sonst als die beiden konnten in ihrer Hassliebe so überzeugen! Seine letzte Rolle spielte Burton - bereits todkrank - 1984 in der gleichnamigen Orwell-Verfilmung "1984" - kurz danach starb er im Alter von nur 58 Jahren." (mdr Presse)
