Albert Capellani was born on August 23, 1874 in Paris. He was a French Director, known for La légende de Polichinelle (1907), La flute merveilleuse (1907), Idée d'apache (1907), Albert Capellani's first movie on record is from 1905. Albert Capellani died on September 26, 1931 in Paris. His last motion picture on file dates from 1931.
Biographical Notes in German: Regisseur und Produzent des französischen und amerikanischen Stummfilms, geboren 1874 in Paris, erst Theaterschauspieler am Théâtre Libre d’Antoine und dem Pariser Odéon. 1903 in der Theaterleitung der Alhambra, zwei Jahre später (1905) zu Pathé Frères unter der Leitung von Ferdiand Zecca, wo Capellani erfolgreich Melodramen oder Phantastische Stücke inszeniert. Charles Pathé übetrug ihm 1908 die künstlerische Leitung der ambitionierten neuen Gesellschaft SCAGI (la Société Cinématographique des Auteurs et Gens de Lettres).

Im Gegensatz zu den Vaudeville-Veranstaltungen sollten die Filme der SCAGI Adaptionen der Klassiker französischer und Welt-Literatur in die Kinos bringen, es entstanden Verfilmungen der Werke von Alphonse Daudet, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola oder Eugène Balzac. Der Erfolg dieser anspruchsvollen Filme - die heute ihrer Theatralik wegen meist nur noch bedingt ansprechen - trug Capellani und Pathé internationale Anerkennung ein. Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges siedelte Capellani in Amerika und gründete die Capellani Production Inc., mit der er auch für die neugegründete Metro Pictures Corporation drehte.

Anfangs der Zwanziger Jahre kehrte Capellani nach Frankreich zurück, musste sich aber bal aus Gesundheitsgründen vom Kino zurückziehen. Ohne einen weiteren Erfolg starb er 1931 im Alter von 57 Jahren. (lhg 2011)
