He was a French Director, Author, Editor, Actor, known for Les Belles de Nuit (1952), Tout l'Or du monde (1961), La beauté du diable (1949), René Clair's first movie on record is from 1920. René Clair died on March 15, 1981 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine. His last motion picture on file dates from 1965.
Biographical Notes in German: eigentlich René Chomette, geboren am 11. November 1998 in Paris, Journalist, dann als Schauspieler zu Louis Feuillade, wird Assistent bei Jacques de Baroncelli. Vielbeachtetes Regiedebut mit ENTR'ACTE 1924. Zu seinen schönsten Stummfilmen zählt die Komödie UN CHAPEAU DE PAILLE D'ITALIE von 1927. Tonfilme wie SOUS LES TOITS DE PARIS, A NOUS LA LIBERTE etc aus den frühen Dreissiger Jahren sind Klassiker des französischen Kinos geworden. Nach der Besetzung Frankreichs geht Clair nach Hollywood, wo er unter anderen die Komödie I MARRIED A WITCH drehte. Zurückgekehrt nach Frankreich kann er an die Vorkriegserfolge anknüpfen mit Filmen wie LE SILENCE EST D'OR oder LES BELLES DE NUIT. 1962 wird René Clair Mitglied der Académie Francaise.

René Clair war auch Autor mehrerer Romane wie "Adams" oder "La princesse de Chine" sowie filmtheorethischer Schriften. In deutsch erschien u.a. "Vom Stummfilm zum Tonfilm" im Jahre 1952.
