Gary Cooper was born on May 7, 1901 in Helena, Montana. He was an American Actor, known for Garden of Evil (1954), High Noon (1952), The Virginian (1929), Gary Cooper's first movie on record is from 1925. Biographical Notes in German: "Gary Cooper (geb. 07.05.1901), Farmersohn aus Montana und College-Absolvent, kam 1924 nach Los Angeles, um als politischer Karikaturist Karriere zu machen. Seine Reitkünste aber übertrafen seine zeichnerischen Qualitäten erheblich und machten ihn für Hollywood überaus interessant. Schon 1926 spielte er eine erste richtige Rolle, wurde von Paramount unter Vertrag genommen und bekam rasch die schönsten Frauen an seine Seite gestellt. Seit den 30er-Jahren gehörte der schlaksig-jungenhafte Hüne von 1,90 Meter Länge mit seiner stoischen Lakonie, seinem einsilbigen Heldentum, aber auch mit seiner unwiderstehlich linkischen Schüchternheit zu den populärsten und höchstbezahlten Stars. Er becircte als Held und verschämter Romantiker Marlene Dietrich (nicht nur vor der Kamera), Jean Arthur oder Claudette Colbert und Ingrid Bergman. Für seine Leistung als aufrechter Provinzler in Frank Capras Politkomödie "Mr. Deeds geht in die Stadt" wurde er für den Oscar nominiert. Er war der legendäre Wild Bill Hickock in dem Monumentalwestern "Der Held der Prärie". Für den Komödienmeister Ernst Lubitsch verzauberte er Miriam Hopkins in "Serenade zu dritt" und Claudette Colbert in "Blaubarts achte Frau". Unter der Regie von Howard Hawks sorgte er für "Die merkwürdige Zähmung der Gangsterbraut Sugarpuss" alias Barbara Stanwyck. In der Hemingway-Verfilmung "Wem die Stunde schlägt" stirbt er den einsamen Heldentod, auch um Ingrid Bergman zu retten. Nach der Darstellung des historischen "Sergeant York" erhält er als allein gelassener Sheriff in "High Noon" seinen zweiten Oscar. Er ist Burt Lancasters siegreicher Rivale in "Vera Cruz". In Billy Wilders bittersüßer Komödie "Liebe am Nachmittag" erhält er von Audrey Hepburn als zynischer Casanova eine Lektion in Sachen Liebe. In Delmer Daves' Westerndrama "Der Galgenbaum" errettet ihn Maria Schell vor dem Erhängen.
In "Ein Mann geht seinen Weg", seinem letzten Film, versuchte der schwerkranke Cooper ein einziges Mal in seinem Leben, einen, wenn auch nur potentiellen, Mörder zu spielen. Er starb noch vor der Uraufführung und sollte nie erfahren, dass dieses Experiment nicht funktioniert hatte. Es konnte nicht funktionieren, auch wenn seine Darstellung des Bedrohlichen und Verstohlenen eigentlich hätte überzeugen müssen. Aber das Publikum konnte seinen Helden "Coop" nicht als Mörder aus Gewinnsucht akzeptieren: "Er zeigte sich von vielen Seiten. Er war sinnlich oder schüchtern, kühn oder lustig, ganz besonders vernünftig oder hochgradig verrückt. Und doch bleibt er als Held im Gedächtnis, da 'der Sieg des menschlichen Mutes ein unwiderstehliches Filmthema ist', wie Lubitsch einmal sagte" (René Jordan: Gary Cooper - seine Filme, sein Leben, Heyne FB 25).
