Claude Autant-Lara was born on August 5, 1903 in Luzarches. He was a French Director, Architekt, known for Le journal d'une femme en blanc (1965), Le nouveau jornal d'une femme en blanc (1966), La jument verte (1959), Claude Autant-Lara's first movie on record is from 1919. Claude Autant-Lara died on February 5, 2000 in Antibes. His last motion picture on file dates from 1977.
Biographical Notes in German: Sohn der Theaterschauspielerin Louise Lara und des Architekten Edouard Autant. 1915 bis 1917 mit seinen Eltern in England, dann 1917 Rückkehr nach Paris, wo er die "Ecole des Beaux Arts Décoratifs" besuchte.

Erste Arbeiten im Film als Szenograph für Filme von Marcel L'Herbier und auch kleine Rollen. Von 1922 auch Kostümentwürfe. 1923 erste Regiearbeit in einem avantgardistischen Kurzfilm "Fait-divers", 1925 Experimentalfilm "Construire un feu" mit einem von Prof. Chrétien entwickelten anamorphotischen Objektiv (das 25 Jahre später von Hollywood aufgekauft zur Grundlage für Cinemscope wurde). Zu seinen bekanntesten Ausstattungen der 20er Jahre zählt Renoirs "Nana".

Anfangs der 30er Jahre überwachte Autant-Lara in Hollywood die französischen Versionen amerikanischer Filme, u.a. Filme von Buster Keaton und William A. Wellman. Erster eigener Spielfilm "Ciboulette" 1933, der nur in einer verstümmelten Version in die Kinos gelangte.

Zu seinen besten und bekanntesten Filmen zählen die Literaturverfilmungen "Le Rouge et le Noir" 1954 nach Stendhal und "Le Joueur" 1958 nach Dostojevskij sowie der 1947 entstandene "Le diable au corps", alle mit Gérard Philipe.
