«In einer über sechs Jahrzehnte dauernden Laufbahn drehte Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (*13. August 1899, †29. April 1980) über 50 Filme. Nicht alle davon waren Meisterwerke - aber fast alle. Das liegt daran, dass der Meister des Suspense sich von Beginn seiner Karriere an auch als versierter Filmtechniker und nimmermüder Experimentator etabliert hatte. Stets suchte er nach Möglichkeiten, um die ohnehin steigenden Erwartungen des Publikums an "den neuen Hitchcock" zu übertreffen. Im Ergebnis vermochte er die Zuschauer nach Belieben zu ängstigen oder zum Lachen zu bringen, etwa in dem morbiden Krimi-Kammerspiel "Cocktail für eine Leiche" von 1948. Hitchcock perfektionierte hier die Kunst des "unsichtbaren Schnitts". Der Film über zwei Studenten, die einen perfekten Mord planen, wirkt wie in einer einzigen Einstellung gedreht. Im britischsten seiner amerikanischen Filme setzte Sir Alfred auf Humor statt formale Exper imente: "Immer Ärger mit Harry" ist eine perfekt inszenierte schwarze Komödie über die wohl lästigste Leiche der Kinogeschichte. Nach dem Erfolg des Agententhrillers "Der unsichtbare Dritte" - in dem Cary Grant auf unvergessliche Weise von einem Flugzeug gejagt wird - drohte die Langeweile des immer Gleichen, zumal Hitchcocks Stil viel kopiert wurde. Der Filmemacher erfand sich einmal mehr neu: Basierend auf Robert Blochs Roman über den Frauenmörder Ed Gein, realisierte er einen vergleichsweise billigen Schwarzweißfilm mit geschickten Anleihen bei jenen B-Movies, die im Kino gerade so beliebt waren. Obwohl in "Psycho" nur wenig Blut zu sehen ist, schufen Hitchcock und der Titeldesigner Saul Bass ein neues Paradigma der Darstellung von Gewalt: Mit dem schockierenden Mord unter der Dusche, eine der meistkommentierten Szenen der Filmgeschichte, verschwindet der Star Janet Leigh überraschenderweise schon nach 45 Minuten aus dem Film. "Psycho" war stilprägend für das Genre des Psychothrillers und markierte den Zenit in Hitchcocks Schaffen. Mit "Marnie", dem artifiziellen Psychogramm einer traumatisierten Frau, erzielte er 1964 einen Achtungserfolg. Auf den doppelbödigen Agententhriller "Topas" reagierten Publikum und Kritik eher zurückhaltend - heute gilt auch dieser Film als Klassiker. In den 70er Jahren endete eine unvergleichlich lange Kreativphase, während der Hitchcock stets die volle Kontrolle über seine Projekte wahrte und oft als sein eigenes Markenzeichen im Film auftrat.
