Lya Mara was born under the given name Lissenka Gudowitsch oder Aleksandra Gudowiczówna on August 1, 1897 in Riga. She was a German Actress, known for Die freudlose Gasse (1925), Tanja, die Frau an der Kette (1921), Die Tochter Napoleons (1922), Lya Mara's first movie on record is from 1916. She was married to Friedrich Zelnik. Lya Mara died on March 1, 1960 in Ticino. Her last motion picture on file dates from 1931.
Biographical Notes in German: eigentlich Lissenka Gudowitsch, Ballettausbildung in Riga. Um 1915 kam Lya Mara nach Warschau und spielte, unter anderem mit Pola Negri, in einigen Filmen des polnischen Regisseurs Aleksander Hertz. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg dann nach Berlin, so sie vor allem in Filmen ihres Ehemanns Friedrich Zelnik in zahlreichen Filmen zu einem der grossen Stars des Kinos der Weimarer Republik wurde. Lya Mara spielte nur in einem Tonfilm, emigrierte dann mit Friedrich Zelnik nach England. Über ihre weitere Karriere ist kaum mehr etwas bekannt, nach dem Tode ihres Mannes soll sie zu einer Schwester in die Schweiz gezogen sein. (lhg 2006)
