Max Ophüls was born on May 6, 1902 in Saarbrücken. He was a German Director, known for The Exile (1947), Lola Montez (1955), La Ronde (1950), Max Ophüls's first movie on record is from 1930. Max Ophüls died on March 26, 1957 in Hamburg. His last motion picture on file dates from 1989.
Biographical Notes in German: Eigentlich Max Oppenheimer, als Sohn einer reichen Kaufmannsfamilie geboren. 1918 Abitur in Saarbrücken, Schauspielschüler bei Fritz Holl in Stuttgart, nennt sich jetzt Max Ophüls. 1920 Schauspieler in Stuttgart, danach in Aachen. 1923 erste Inszenierungen in Dortmund, 1924-25 Regisseur in Elberfeld - Barmen. 1926 einige Inszenierungen am Wiener Burgtheater, Heirat mit Hilde Wall. 1927 Regisseur in Frankfurt, Geburt des Sohnes Marcel. 1928 Regisseur in Breslau, Erste Arbeiten für den Rundfunk. 1930 Berlin, Inszenierungen von Lustspielen, erste Kontakte mit dem Film.
1933 verlässt Ophüls mit seiner Familie Deutschland, wird 1934 französischer Staatsbürger, dreht in Frankreich und Italien. 1936 Filmarbeit in Holland, 1940 vorübergehender Aufenthalt in der Schweiz, 1941 erneute Emigration in die USA, bis 1946 in Hollywood ohne Regie-Aufträge, schreibt seine Autobiographie. 1950 Rückkehr nach Frankreich, 1954 Arbeit für den Rundfunk in Baden-Baden: "Bertha Garlan" von Schnitzler und "Novelle" von Goethe. 1957 Inszenierung am Hamburger Schauspielhaus "Der tolle Tag" von Beaumarchais.
Max Ophüls stirbt am 26. März 1957 in einer Hamburger Klinik.
