Seine Karriere begann in den siebziger Jahren als Theater- und Fernsehkomiker in Rom. 1976 debütierte er in Guiseppe Bertoluccis Spielfilm ,Berlinger, ti voglio bene". In den folgenden Jahren gelang es ihm, sich als Zuschauerliebling, Regisseur und Autor in zahlreichen italienischen Fernsehkomödien zu etablieren.

Der internationale Durchbruch gelang Benigni 1986 in Jim Jarmuschs ,Down by Law". Seine Leistung in Frederico Fellinis ,La Voce della Luna" (Die Stimme des Mondes) brachte ihm ebenfalls weltweite Anerkennung ein.
Als römischer Taxifahrer, der seinem Fahrgast, einem Priester, sein unstetes Liebesleben beichtet - bis dieser schockiert einem Herzinfarkt erliegt, brillierte er 1991 in Jarmuschs ,Night on Earth".

Regie führte er u.a. bei den Komödien ,Ein himmlischer Teufel" (1988) mit Walther Matthau und den italienischen Zuschauererfolgen ,Zahnstocher Johnny" (1991) und ,Il Mostro" (,The Monster"), in denen er auch die Hauptrollen spielte.
Von Blake Edwards wurde er 1992 als ,Der Sohn des Rosaroten Panthers" in der achten Folge der Kriminalkomödie besetzt.

Seine neueste Regiearbeit ,La vita è bella" (,Life is beautiful", 1997) ist eine berührende Geschichte voller Humor um einen Vater (Roberto Benigni), der in den Wirrungen des Nationalsozialismus gemeinsam mit seinem fünfjährigen Sohn in ein Arbeitslager deportiert wird.

Roberto Benigni wird zu Recht als ,Italiens Nationalkomiker" bezeichnet.
