Danach Regieassistent bei Abbas Kiarostami. In seinen eigenen, auf internationalen Festivals preisgekrönten Filmen, die einem neorealistischen Stil verpflichtet sind, schildert er wiederholt die Probleme von Frauen wie auch das Missverhältnis von Armut und Reichtum in seinem Land. Für DAYEREH (DER KREIS) erhielt er im Jahr 2000 den Goldenen Löwen der Filmfestspiele Venedig.
