Biographical Notes in German: Omar Sharif, bürgerlicher Name: Michael Shalhoub, kam am 10. April 1932 in Alexandria als Kind wohlhabender ägyptisch-libanesischer Eltern zur Welt. Er studierte Mathematik und Physik und arbeitete im holzverarbeitenden Familienbetrieb, bevor er seine erste Rolle in einem ägyptischen Film übernahm. Damit begann eine Karriere, die ihn innerhalb weniger Jahre zum größten Filmstar seiner Heimat machte. Der britische Regisseur David Lean wählte ihn 1962 für die Rolle des Sherif Ali in seinem Wüstenepos "Lawrence von Arabien" aus - über Nacht avancierte Sharif zum Weltstar, erhielt für seine Leistung eine Oscar-Nominierung als bester Nebendarsteller und galt fortan, dank seines exotischen Aussehens, seiner glühenden Augen und seiner samtweichen Stimme, als das männliche Sexsymbol der 60er Jahre. Es folgten die mit einem Golden Globe ausgezeichnete Titelrolle in David Leans legendärem Russland-Epos "Doktor Schiwago" (an der Seite von Julie Christie), das Musical "Funny Girl", in dem er Barbra Streisands abtrünnigen Ehemann spielte, das historische Liebesdrama "Mayerling" mit Catherine Deneuve sowie "Che!", in dem Omar Sharif den südamerikanischen Revolutionär Che Guevara spielte. Sharif, der fließend Englisch, Französisch, Griechisch und Arabisch spricht, drehte in Hollywood und Europa mit den bedeutendsten Regisseuren seiner Zeit, darunter Fred Zinnemann, Anthony Asquith, Terence Young, Anthony Mann, Anatole Litvak, William Wyler und Sidney Lumet. Sharif, der sich neben der Schauspielerei einen Namen als einer der weltbesten Bridge-Spieler machte und zudem als ausgemachter Pferde-Kenner gilt, lebt in Kairo und in Paris. Sein Sohn Tarek aus der 1974 geschiedenen Ehe mit der ägyptischen Schauspielerin Faten Hamama kam 1957 zur Welt. Beim Filmfestival in Venedig 2003 wurde Omar Sharif nicht nur mit einem Goldenen Löwen für sein Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet, er erhielt auch den Publikumspreis als bester Schauspieler für "Monsieur Ibrahim und die Blumen des Koran".
