Biographische Notizen
After studying painting, he graduated at the Film Academy in Prague (department: directing) and worked as a director with the internationally renowed LATERNA MAGICA theater. During his studies he shot several films, including "The Silence" (MILCANIE), for which he received the Brussels Film School's (INSAC) prize at the Knokke Film Festival. Some of his former associates, like Forman and Passer, nowadays work in the United States. "I decided to stay. I need a Czech film team for my work, for only then can I make the kind of film I have in mind, and express what I want to express". (Jakubisko)
His final project at the Academy, "They are waiting for Godot" (CAKAJU NA GODOTA) was awarded first prize as the best short feature film at Oberhausen in 1968 and received the Simon Dubreuilh Prize at Mannheim that same year. His film "Christ's Years" (KRISTOVE ROKY) was awarded the International Filmcritics' Prize (FIPRESCI), the Joseph von Sternberg Prize and the Prize of the International Jury of the German "Volkshochschule". Among his many theater and short films, "The Building of the Century" (STAVBA STOROCIA) received first prize at the International Film Festival in Budapest in 1973, while "The little Drummer" (BUBENIK) won a gold medal at the Varna Film Festival in 1977 as well as an honorable mention at Oberhausen in 1978.
"The Millennial Bee" was awarded the FENICE DEL CINEMA at the 1983 International Film Festival in Venice, and received the prize for "most beautiful film" from the Federation of Film Clubs at the 1983 non-competitive International Film Festival in Seville. At the non-competitive festivals in Belgrade in February, and in Vienna (Viennale '84) in April 1984 "The Millennial Bee" was once again the favourite of press and public alike, as it had been at the earlier events.
1985 "Frau Holle" - an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale starring Giulietta Masina - competed at the Festival in Venice. In the following year this film received the "Prix de la jeune public" at the Leon Festival.
