Biographical Notes
Born in Zurich in 1884, in 1923 this writer, playwright and art dealer sold the most precious painting in his possession– Van Gogh’s Sunflowers - to set up a production company, Gotthard-film. In 1924, he moved to Paris and embarked on an international career. In artistic terms, one of his greatest successes remains Rapt , directed by Dimitri Kirsanoff in 1933. Forced to return to Switzerland in 1940, he produced another three films there, before abandoning cinema altogether, discouraged by the protracted negotiations over his project for a film about Henri Dunant, which finally resulted in D’homme à hommes, directed by Christian-Jaque in 1948.
