Englische Schauspielerin im amerikanischen und internationalen Film, debütierte in den Vierziger Jahren in Kinderrollen und hatte bereits mit Filmen wie "Lassie come home" die Grundlage für eine erolgreiche Karriere gelegt. George Stevens "A Place in the Sun" aus dem Jahre 1952 machte sie zum internationalen Star, Richard Brooks' "Cat on a hot tin roof" zur gefeierten Tennessee William Schauspielerin und Mankiewicz' "Cleopatra" zur höchstbezahlten Diva Hollywoods.
Eine Karriere mit Höhen und Tiefen, ein aufreibendes Privatleben mit acht Ehen und sieben verschiedenen Ehemännern, und ein grosses soziales Engagement prägten das Leben einer Frau, die nicht nur lange als die Schönste galt, sondern auch den Mut hatte, in ihren Rollen bis zum Exzess fraugewordener Hyänen zu gehen. Für ihre Rollen wurde sie zweimal mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnet.
