Erwähnt wird in einem Artikel von 191x seine Karriere als Schaspieler und Stage Manager seit zwanzig Jahren, was nahe lehen würde, dass Kaufman um 1895 zum ersten Male auftrat. Es finden sich aber auch keine Hinweise auf eine Ausbildung als Schauspieler, so dass man annehmen könnte, Kaufman habe des Handwerk des Schauspielers "von der Pike" gelernt.
