«Marcel L'Herbier ist einer der mythischen französischen Regisseure der Stummfilmzeit. Ausgerechnet er, der Jura und Literatur studierte und den Film abgelehnt hatte, wurde im Ersten Weltkrieg in der Kinokompanie eingesetzt. Nachdem er "Forfaiture" (1915) von Cecil B. DeMille gesehen hatte, begann seine Begeisterung für das Kino. Noch im letzten Kriegsjahr dreht er seinen ersten Film unter Aufsicht des Propagandaministeriums. In einem theoretischen Aufsatz bezeichnete er das Kino als "Sprache", die zu den Massen spreche, und von daher eigentlich keine Kunst sei. Seine Stummfilme sind volksnahe Geschichten für die Leinwand in avantgardistischem Gewand: Ein MacOrlan schrieb schon mal das Drehbuch und Mallet-Stevens oder Léger lieferten die Entwürfe für die Bauten. Der 1921 entstandene Film "El Dorado", (...), gilt als sein Meisterwerk.

Mit dem Tonfilm nahm das Interesse für die Moderne ab. "Entente cordiale", am Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs entstanden, ist ein patriotischer Aufruf zur Mobilisierung. Unter der deutschen Besetzung wandte er sich einem poetischen, der Realität den Rücken kehrenden Kino zu (La Nuit Fantastique, 1942). Ein Jahr später gründete er die Pariser Filmhochschule IDHEC und war ihr erster Leiter. Nach dem Krieg engagierte er sich für die französische Filmindustrie und nach 1952 arbeitete er beim Fernsehen. Der Ehrenlegionär Marcel L'Herbier starb am 26. November 1979 im Alter von 91 Jahren und ist bis heute nur Insidern bekannt.» (arte Presse)
