Starlet des amerikanischen Films der Vierziger und Fünfziger Jahre, Ausbildung als Tänzerin, wurde hatte sie Mitte der Dreissiger Jahre erste Filmrollen, dann vorwiegend in B-Pictures Komödien und Western zwischen 1942 und 1950. Zu den bedeutenderen Titel ihrer Karriere zählen die Komödie "Hallzapoppin'", die ausgeflippte Komödie von H.C. Potter, wo sie eine kleine Nebenrolle hatte, Robert Parrish's Film Noir "Cry Danger" und "The left hand of God" als Mary Yin mit Humphrey Bogart, Gene Tierney und Lee J. Cobb unter der Regie von Edward Dmytryk, mit dem sie seit 1948 bis zu seinem Tod 1999 verheiratet war.
