Sinossi (in Tedesco)
Nach einem blutigen Feuergefecht muss sich Wyatt Earp, Marshall in Tombstone, zusammen mit seinem Freund Doc Holliday und seinen Brüdern Virgil und Morgan vor Gericht verantworten. Bandenboss Ike Clanton will dem Marshall damit heimzahlen, dass Wyatt Earp mit seinen Gefährten einige Männer der Clanton-Bande er-schossen hat.

Obwohl Clanton schon einigen Einfluss in Tombstone hat, geht seine Rechnung nicht auf. Wyatt Earp und die anderen werden freigesprochen. Für Clanton ist das ein Grund mehr, alles zu versuchen, um seine Position in der Stadt auszubauen. Als ein neuer Marshall gewählt werden soll, lässt er einen seiner Gefolgsmänner gegen Virgil Earp kandidieren.

Bald zeigt sich jedoch, dass Virgil Earp das Rennen machen wird. Daraufhin hetzt Clanton seine Leute auf ihn. Sie schiessen Virgil Earp zum Krüppel und bringen später Morgan Earp um, als sich dieser an Virgils Stelle um das Marshallamt bewirbt.

Zum Marshall der Bundespolizei ernannt, nimmt Wyatt Earp nunmehr zusammen mit Doc Holliday die Verfolgung der Mörder auf. Die Haftbefehle gegen sie dienen ihm letztlich nur als Vorwand, um Rache zu nehmen. (ndr Film-Lexikon)

Osservazione generali (in Tedesco): "Die Geschichte beginnt dort, wo andere Western aufhören, beim legendären Schusswechsel am O.K. Corral. Regisseur Sturges selbst hat das Jahre zuvor in 'Zwei rechnen ab' ('Gunfight at the O.K. Corral') grandios in Szene gesetzt. Damals war Wyatt Earp noch ein eindeutig positiver Held. In diesem Film aber, der am O.K. Corral beginnt, geht es finsterer zu. Hier ist Wyatt Earp ein zwielichtiger, von Rache entstellter Mann, der auch von Doc Holliday nicht zurückgehalten werden kann."
