Synopsis in German
Steve Grey (Spencer Tracy) ist der Starreporter des New Yorker "Daily Star". Dort arbeitet auch Mary Shannon (Virginia Bruce), die sich in ihn verliebt hat. Als ein zweifelhafter Geschäftsmann erschossen wird, will die Redaktion Grey auf den Fall ansetzen. Er ist jedoch zunächst einmal spurlos verschwunden. Man findet ihn schließlich auf einem Rummelplatz, wo er einen Mordsrausch ausschläft. Dann jedoch wird er sehr aktiv und kann Captain Cole (Lionel Atwill), der die polizeilichen Ermittlungen leitet, einen wichtigen Tipp geben. Er führt zur Verhaftung von Henry Mander (Harvey Stephens), dem Geschäftspartner des Ermordeten, der den tödlichen Schuss abgegeben haben soll, um eine hohe Versicherungssumme zu kassieren. Auch in der Gerichtsverhandlung gibt Greys Aussage den Ausschlag für das Todesurteil gegen den Angeklagten. Nach dem Prozess muss der agile Reporter erst einmal gründlich ausspannen. Als seiner Zeitung gestattet wird, kurz vor der geplanten Hinrichtung mit Mander in der Todeszelle ein Interview zu machen, holt man Grey aus dem Urlaub zurück. Keiner ahnt zu diesem Zeitpunkt, dass er für eine Sensation sorgen wird ...
