Anknüpfend an seine frühere literarische und filmische Beschäftigung mit dem Subproletariat, den Ärmsten der Armen Italiens, legte Pasolini die Schauplätze seines Bibelfilms von Palästina in die Landstriche Apuliens, Lukaniens und Kalabriens. Die Szenen in den süditalienischen Bergdörfern und Ruinen von Stauferburgen erinnern an die Passionsdarstellungen italienischer Maler. Weil Pasolini in "Das 1. Evangelium - Matthäus" weitgehend dem biblischen Text der Lebensgeschichte Jesu folgt, sind die damaligen Angriffe gegen den Film heute nur noch schwer zu verstehen.
Beim Filmfestival von Venedig wurde Pasolini für seine Regieleistung mit dem "Spezialpreis der Jury" ausgezeichnet. Das "nationale Syndikat der italienischen Filmjournalisten" verlieh ihm, seinem Kameramann Tonino Delli Colli und seinem Kostümbildner Danilo Donati das "Silberne Band". In drei Kategorien wurde die außergewöhnliche Bibelinterpretation für einen Oscar nominiert - für die beste künstlerische Ausstattung in Schwarz-Weiß (Luigi Scaccianoce), für die besten schwarz-weißen Kostüme (Danilo Donati) und die beste Filmmusik (Luis Enriquez Bacalov).
