Synopsis in German
«Mir übers Haar streichen bringt Glück!», meint Graf Farrière zur Komtesse Mara, die auf der Flucht ist vor dem unbedarften Grafen Otto. Die Komtesse bleibt zwar glücklos im Spiel, dafür erobert sie das Herz des Grafen, der sich als Friseur verkleidet, um sie zu bezirzen. Mit der üblichen Leichtigkeit würzt Lubitsch das Musical mit gewagten Anspielungen. (Locarno 2010)

Reviews in German: «Virtuos, wie sich die beiden Hauptpersonen zuerst begegnen. Wie er hinter ihr hergeht und auf sie einspricht. Mit Fingerspitzengefühl die Impression des Spiel saals, ein musikalisch feines Duett durch das Telephon. Unnachahmlich, wie die Komtesse morgens mit dem Schwarm ihrer Anbeter durch den Park von Monte Carlo wandelt, wie der gräfliche Friseur eingeführt wird. Endlos könnte man so einzelne Beispiele aufzählen, die doch im Prinzip immer nur wieder zu der Feststellung führen, dass das Ganze vollkommen ist.
Bemerkenswert im Übrigen gerade für den Fachmann, wie geschickt die deutschen Texte einkopiert sind, wie man den Raum für diesen technischen Behelf schon vorher beinah vorausbestimmt hat. Mit seltenem Geschmack das dekorative Element, ganz gleich, ob es sich um Monte Carlo made in Hollywood oder um eingeschnittene Aufnahme von der Côte d’Azur handelt.» [Kinematograph, 3.7.1931]

Für Europa wurde eigens eine stumme Fassung hergestellt, weil man in Hollywood die Lieder und Dialoge nicht in andere Sprachen synchronisieren wollte. Die neue Restaurierung dieser weithin unbekannten Fassung durch die Library of Congress erlebt bei den 30.
