Synopsis in German
Pierre hat im Affekt seine Freundin getötet. Als blinder Passagier versucht er nun, von Nizza aus auf einem Frachtschiff nach Südamerika zu gelangen. Bei einem Zwischenstop in Genua verlässt er das Schiff, um einen Zahnarzt aufzusuchen. Ohne Geld und der Sprache nicht mächtig, irrt Pierre durch das düstere Hafenviertel der vom Krieg gezeichneten Stadt. Schliesslich nimmt sich seiner die halbwüchsige Jeanine an. In einer Hafenkneipe lernt er Jeanines Mutter kennen. Auch sie ist eine Flüchtige. Mit ihrer kleinen Tochter floh sie vor ihrem gewalttätigen Ehemann. Obwohl Pierre kein Geld hat - um das prellte ihn ein Strassenhändler - bedient sie den sympathischen Fremden. Als es Pierre nicht gelingt, sich wieder ins Hafenviertel einzuschmuggeln, klopft er an Marlies Wohnungstür. Er sucht nicht nur eine Bleibe für die Nacht, sondern auch einen Menschen, dem er sich in seiner seelischen Not anvertrauen kann. Ihr Verständnis und Vertrauen geben Pierre ein Stück Hoffnung zurück. Doch Jeanine, eifersüchtig auf den Eindringling, lässt nichst unversucht, ihn zur Abreise zu bewegen. Als sie aber spürt, wie sehr ihre Mutter diesem Mann zugetan ist, versucht sie, Pierre zu warnen, als ihm die Polizei auf der Spur ist. Während Jeanine ihr "Vorsicht Pierre !" an die Kaimauern malt, geniessen Marlie und Pierre eine Nacht des Glücks. (mdr Presse)

Remarks and general Information in German: René Cléments Film folgt streng den Regeln des italienischen Neorealismus und entwirft dabei eine beeindruckende Studie über das verzweifelte Sehnen nach Geborgenheit und Glück in einer Welt, die nur Armut und Enttäuschung kennt. Mit "Die Mauern von Malapaga" konnte Jean Gabin endlich wieder an seine Erfolge der 30er Jahre anknüpfen. Er und Isa Miranda spielen ihre Rollen unter Vermeidung jeglicher Klischees. Auf den Filmfestspielen in Cannes 1949 wurde der Film, der auch unter dem Titel "Aufenthalt in Genua" bekannt ist, mit einer Goldenen Palme für die beste Regie und einer Goldenen Palme für Isa Miranda ausgezeichnet. Ein Jahr später erhielt der Film den Ehren-Oscar für den besten fremdsprachigen Film. (mdr)
