Reviews in German: FEAST OF JULY. Local lass in Hollywood Embeth Davidtz proves her abilities in ì
Feast of July, a painfully detailed period drama produced by masters of the ì
genre Merchant/Ivory. Based on the novel by HE Bates, it tells the tale of a ì
young woman, Bella Ford, who is betrayed by her lover. Setting out on an ì
arduous search for him, she finds shelter with a family and falls for their ì
youngest son instead. You can well imagine the tragic potential of these ì
circumstances. Director Christopher Menaul tries his best, but the movie as a ì
whole doesn't possess the nuance of Davidtz's performance and ends up as ì
laboured and depressing. -- AW in Mail & Guardian
