Valentino, der Latin Lover par excellence, entführt in diesem exotisch-orientalischen Liebesfilm eine junge Engländerin, die schließlich zum Objekt seiner Begierden wird.

Die damals weltweit größte Filmmaschinerie nährte mit diesem Film den modernen Märchen-Orientalismus anglo-amerikanischer Prägung. Neben seiner Exotik besticht der Film durch seine darstellerischen Leistungen bis in die kleinsten Nebenrollen. Aber auch formale Effekte wie Doppelbelichtungen, in denen Valentino gleichzeitig in seinen beiden Rollen erscheint, machen den Film zu einem visuellen Vergnügen.

Für den skandalumwitterten Valentino sollte dies seine letzte Rolle sein. Er starb kurz darauf im Alter von 31 Jahren an einem Magendurchbruch. Der Tod des „begehrtesten Mannes aller Zeiten“ löste eine wahre Massenhysterie aus. In New York war Gerüchten zufolge tagelang der Verkehr lahm gelegt, und einige Verehrerinnen versuchten sich angeblich sogar an seinem Grab das Leben zu nehmen." (österreichische filmgalerie)
