Synopsis in German
Fürst Dimitrij Nechljudow (Timothy Peach) sitzt bei einem Mordprozess auf der Geschworenenbank. Angeklagt wird eine Dirne, die einen Moskauer Kaufmann vergiftet haben soll. Bestürzt erkennt Dimitrij, dass die Angeklagte seine Jugendliebe Katjuscha Maslowa (Stefania Rocca) ist. Vor Jahren hatte er sich während eines Sommerurlaubs in sie verliebt. Nicht wissend, dass sie ein Kind von ihm erwartete, hatte Dimitrij dann die nicht standesgemäße Liaison beendet und Katjuscha nie mehr wieder gesehen. Die mittellose Frau verlor ihr Kind und schlug sich fortan als Prostituierte durch. Im Prozess stellt sich heraus, dass Katjuscha das Opfer einer Intrige ist; die Geschworenen beschließen daher ihren Freispruch. Doch ein Formfehler im Wortlaut des Geschworenenspruchs führt zu Katjuschas Verurteilung. Um sein Verhalten wieder gutzumachen, setzt Dimitrij Himmel und Hölle in Bewegung, um ihr zu helfen. Zunächst vergeblich - Katjuscha wird in ein sibirisches Straflager deportiert. In der Hoffnung, dass sie seinen Heiratsantrag annimmt, folgt der Fürst Katjuscha. Als aus Moskau überraschend doch noch die Nachricht von ihrer Begnadigung eintrifft und einem gemeinsamen Leben mit Dimitrij nichts mehr im Wege steht, trifft Katjuscha eine schwere Entscheidung. Obwohl auch sie nie aufgehört hat, Dimitrij zu lieben, heiratet sie nicht ihn, sondern den politischen Gefangenen Simonson (Giulio Scarpati).
