Synopsis in German
Mata Hari (Greta Garbo), eine faszinierende Schönheitstänzerin, bezaubert in den Jahren des Ersten Weltkriegs Paris. Oft sieht man sie im Spielclub des eleganten Monsieur Adriani (Lewis Stone), in dem hohe Offiziere und einflussreiche Zivilisten verkehren. Dass Adriani heimlich für die Deutschen arbeitet und Mata Hari seine beste Spionin ist, weiß nur General Shubin (Lionel Barrymore), Attaché der russischen Botschaft, der ihr hörig ist und sein Land an sie verraten hat, um sie zur Geliebten zu gewinnen.
Als der junge russische Fliegerleutnant Alexis Rosanoff (Ramon Novarro) mit wichtigem Geheimmaterial nach Paris kommt, ist auch er fasziniert von der schönen Frau. Shubin spürt, dass es Mata Hari nicht nur um dessen Dokumente geht, als sie sich mit Rosanoff einlässt. Er reagiert mit rasender Eifersucht und versucht, Mata Hari an die französische Abwehr zu verraten. Sie erschießt ihn kaltblütig und will sich nach Holland absetzen, erfährt jedoch, dass Rosanoff abgestürzt und schwer verletzt ist. Sie eilt zu ihm und wird kurz darauf verhaftet und zum Tod durch Erschießen verurteilt. Nach einem schmerzlichen Abschied von Rosanoff tritt sie vor das Exekutionskommando.... (ARD Presse)
