Der Dreizehn-Teiler "Die Leute vom Domplatz" ist mit zweijähriger Vorbereitungszeit, 80 Darstellern, 100 Komparsen und 2,5 Millionen Mark Herstellungskosten zur aufwendigsten Produktion des ARD-Kinderprogramms geraten.
Für die neue Reihe, in der das Alltagsleben in einer mittelalterlichen Kleinstadt gezeigt wird, wurde ein Jahr Quellenstudium betrieben. Ein weiteres Jahr verschlangen die technischen Vorarbeiten inklusive Requisitenbeschaffung. Extra angefertigt wurden u.a.: 152 Perücken, 260 Kostüme, 120 Holzbecher, 130 Tongefäße sowie 25 mundgeblasene Karaffen und Gläser.
Gedreht wurde im "Bluebox"-Verfahren. Dabei agieren die Darsteller in einem blau ausgeschlagenen Studio, und die Stadtkulissen, die im verkleinerten Maßstab nachgebaut wurden, werden später dazukopiert.
Von ihrem aufwendigen Werk versprechen sich die SWF-Redakteure auch Absatzchancen im Ausland: Zusätzliche Tonspuren für eine spätere Synchronisation wurden deshalb schon eingerichtet.» (Funk Uhr 3/1980, S. 7)
