Synopsis in German
Im Jahr 814 nach Christi ist Johanna zu einem Leben als Frau verdammt. Ihr Lebensweg scheint vorbestimmt: arbeiten, Kinder kriegen und früh sterben. Doch Johanna lehnt sich auf, gegen den strengen Vater, gegen die Regeln der Kirche, für ihre Überzeugung und ihren Glauben. Denn sie spürt, dass ihre Bestimmung eine andere ist, dass Gott ihr einen anderen Weg weist. Doch der Preis dafür ist hoch.
In Dorstadt besucht Johanna die Domschule und begegnet Graf Gerold, einem Edelmann am Hofe des Bischofs. Aus ihrer Freundschaft wird Liebe. Als Gerold in den Krieg zieht, erinnert sich Johanna ihrer Bestimmung. Ihr Ziel aber kann sie als Frau nicht erreichen. Johanna trifft eine folgenreiche Entscheidung: Unter dem Namen Bruder Johannes tritt sie als Mann verkleidet ins Benediktinerkloster Fulda ein und lebt dort als heilkundiger und geachteter Arzt. Als ihre wahre Identität droht, aufgedeckt zu werden, flieht sie nach Rom.
Dort trifft sie Gerold wieder und bemerkt, dass sie eines nicht länger verleugnen kann: ihre Liebe. Immer weiter steigt Johanna in der kirchlichen Hierarchie auf, immer größer wird die Gefahr der Entdeckung und immer stärker spürt sie, dass sie sich entscheiden muss: Will sie ihr Herz Gott schenken oder einem Mann? Doch ihr bleibt keine Wahl. Als Papst Sergius stirbt, wird Johanna zu seinem Nachfolger gewählt. Ihre Gefühle für Gerold sind jedoch stärker als ihre Angst, durchschaut zu werden - Johannas Feinde aber warten nur auf eine Gelegenheit, um sie vom Thron zu stürzen. (ARD Presse)
