Auf Einladung des japanischen Kultusministeriums drehte der einstige "Bergfilmer" Fanck diesen "Kultur-Spielfilm" mit japanischen Darstellern in Japan, die erste deutsch-japanische Co-Produktion: Der junge Japaner Teruo gerät in den Konflikt zwischen Tradition und Moderne, als er nach einem mehrjährigen Studienaufenthalt in Deutschland, den ihm sein reicher Adoptivvater finanziert hat, nach Japan zurückkehrt. Nun soll er Mitsuko heiraten, die Tochter des Adoptivvaters, der er schon seit langem versprochen ist. Doch er, der die Freiheiten der westlichen Welt kennen gelernt hat, will jetzt lieber die Frau heiraten, die er liebt, und verhält sich Mitsuko gegenüber abweisend. Als Mitsuko sich daraufhin in den brodelnden Krater eines Vulkans stürzen will, wird Teruo klar, dass er einen Fehler gemacht hat. Er rettet Mitsuko und wird ihr Ehemann. (www.filmportal.de)
