Italian title: Notti di peccato Reviews in German: Der erste Tonfilm Victor Sjöströms und gleichzeitig seine letzte Hollywood-Produktion, Adaption eines 1925 erschienenen Theaterstückes von Sidney Howard krankt auch an all den typischen Kinderkrankheiten des frühen amerikanischen Tonfilms, dialoglastig, statisch gedreht, zum Teil auch von den Schauspielern überartikuliert, um mit der unbeweglichen Tontechnik zuschlage zu kommen. Nur wenig kommt durch von den optischen Qualitäten eines Sjöströms, der immerhin ein paar Jahre zuvor so trefflich inszenierte Produktionen wie THE SCARLET LETTER und THE WIND gedreht hatte. Ein paar Momente reissen den Film aus seiner Mittelmässigkeit heraus, etwa die Hochzeitsszene und Edwin G. Robinsons zum Teil glänzende Auftritte. (lhg 2007)
