«In einem Prolog und acht Kapiteln lässt Andrej Tarkowskij das russische Mittelalter in monumentalen Tableaus aufleben: Tatareneinfälle auf russische Dörfer, die Vertreibung von Angehörigen einer Sekte oder die aufwendigen Vorkehrungen für die Herstellung einer Glocke. Sie bilden den prägenden Hintergrund für die biografischen Momentaufnahmen aus dem Leben des Ikonenmalers Andrej Rubljow (etwa 1360–1430), der mit anderen Mönchen und seinem Gehilfen von Kloster zu Kloster zieht und sich auf seine eigentliche Aufgabe vorbereitet: die Dreifaltigkeitsikone.
