Hannes Schmidhauser verkörpert darin den Uli, Liselotte Pulver Vreneli. Der Film wurde zum Kinorenner und machte die beiden Hauptdarsteller zu Stars. In der Folge adaptierte Franz Schnyder - ab 1957 als eigener Produzent - vier weitere Gotthelf-Romane für die Leinwand.» (3Sat Presse)
