Madame Beudet lebt ein stilles Leben in einer französischen Provinzstadt, zurückgezogen in die Welt ihrer Gedanken. Ihre Ehe lässt kaum Raum für eigene Wünsche und Bedürfnisse. Madame Beudets Mann hat einen merkwürdigen Sinn für Humor. In der Schreibtischschublade versteckt er einen ungeladenen Revolver, den er sich ab und zu an den Kopf hält, wenn er seine Frau erschrecken will. Madame Beudet erträgt diese Provokation nicht mehr und steckt eine Patrone in das Waffenmagazin. Der Anschlag gegen das männliche Dominanzgebaren schlägt fehl. Und wieder folgt die schweigsame Madame Beudet ihrem Mann über die leeren Straßen der kleinen Provinzstadt.... (ARTE Presse)

Beudet hat Germaine Dulac einen der ersten feministischen Filme der Filmgeschichte geschaffen: Die Geschichte ist subjektiv aus der Perspektive der introvertierten Madame Beudet erzählt - in ruhig komponierten Bildern, beobachtend und immer auf der Suche nach sprechenden Details im Alltag der Protagonistin. Germaine Dulac verbindet Erzähltechniken des französischen impressionistischen Kinos mit dem Versuch, Innenwelten und Sehnsüchte einer jungen Frau darzustellen. Dafür setzt sie ausgefeilte visuelle Mittel ein, die sie als Vertreterin der französischen Kino-Avantgarde auszeichnen, und bricht lineare Erzählfolgen. Der Film changiert zwischen Traum und Wirklichkeit, Vision und Erinnerung, Melodram und Sozialkritik.
