Nevada, Ende der dreißiger Jahre. Jess Tyler (Stacy Keach) fristet ein einsames Dasein als Aufseher einer stillgelegten Silbermine. Der Mittvierziger hat sich mit dem bescheidenen Leben am Rande der Zivilisation arrangiert und erträgt es als gottgegeben - bis eines Tages seine Tochter Kady (Pia Zadora) auftaucht, die er seit zehn Jahren nicht mehr gesehen hat.
