Synopsis in German
Kalifornien, 1941. Sechs Tage sind vergangen, seit japanische Kampfflugzeuge Pearl Harbor attackiert und einen Grossteil der US-Pazifikflotte vernichtet haben. In Kalifornien, dem wahrscheinlich nächsten Ziel der Japaner, macht sich Panik breit. Die Menschen an der US-Westküste sind bis aufs Äusserste angespannt.
Ein auf sich selbst gestelltes japanisches Unterseeboot taucht vor der Küste auf, und der Kapitän Mitamura (Toshiro Mifune) sowie sein Nazi-Kumpan Graf von Kleinschmidt (Christopher Lee) beschliessen, Hollywood anzugreifen. Als dieser Vorfall zusammen mit Gerüchten über andere Angriffe die Runde macht, bricht das totale Chaos aus. Tieffliegerangriffe (unter anderen mit John Belushi) auf den Hollywood-Boulevard, Massenschlägereien bei Jitterbug-Tanz-Wettbewerben, zur Verteidigung aktivierte Bauchredner, Amokfahrer und eine hysterische Heimwehr: Steven Spielberg reiht eine absurde Situation an die andere. Für seine «Slapstick-Maschine» liess er tonnenweise Requisiten verschrotten.
Das Ganze ist eine Huldigung an das Kino, gleichzeitig eine Achterbahnfahrt durch die Filmwelten Spielbergs mit bösen Spitzen gegen den American Way of Life und die (nicht nur) damals herrschende Paranoia im Land. (Presse SF DRS)
