Eines Abends erlebt Rechtsanwalt Dr. Renz eine Überraschung: Birgit sucht ihn auf! Birgit Weißenborn, mit der ihn vor nunmehr 27 Jahren eine innige Freundschaft verband. Doch Birgit ist nicht gekommen, um alte Erinnerungen zu beschwören, sondern sie bittet Renz, ihr bei einem Geschäft behilflich zu sein. Sie will nämlich "L'Acardie", den alten Landsitz ihrer Familie, verkaufen, um mit dem Geld Anteile an der Farbenfabrik GAFAL zu erwerben.
Renz ist skeptisch, erliegt dann aber den gemeinsamen Erinnerungen und besorgt einen Käufer. Zugleich aber schickt er Matula zur GAFAL, um Erkundigungen über die Firma einzuholen. Matulas Auskünfte sind niederschmetternd, die GAFAL steht kurz vor der Pleite. Renz warnt Birgit dringend vor dem Kauf - vergeblich. Viel zu spät merkt er, welche Absichten Birgit wirklich mit dem Geschäft verbindet. (Odeon-Film)
