Die einsame, übergewichtige Krankenschwester Martha lernt über eine Partnerschaftsvermittlung den charmanten Ray kennen und verliebt sich in ihn. Auch die Erkenntnis, dass Ray ein professioneller Heiratsschwindler ist, ändert nichts an ihren Gefühlen. Sie wird zu seiner Komplizin, die auch nicht davor zurückschreckt, Verdacht schöpfende Heiratskandidatinnen gewaltsam aus dem Weg zu räumen - immer darauf hoffend, dass er seine "Tätigkeit" eines Tages aufgibt um sie zu heiraten. Längst hat dieser Film noir, der nicht mit ironischen Seitenhieben auf den "American Way of Life" spart, Kultstatus erreicht. Für François Truffaut war der wirkungsvoll mit der Musik von Gustav Mahler unterlegte Film sogar sein amerikanisches Lieblingswerk. Ursprünglich hatte man den damals noch unbekannten Regisseur Martin Scorsese für die Dreharbeiten engagiert, ihn aber nach wenigen Drehtagen wegen "künstlerischer Differenzen" entlassen.
