Anja ist Polizistin in einer bayerischen Gemeinde. Nach der Trennung von ihrem Ehemann Franz bemüht sie sich um ein geregeltes Leben in der neuen Situation. Viele Nachtdienste, die 13-jährige pubertierende Tochter Laura und ein angespanntes Verhältnis zu ihrer eigenen Mutter hinterlassen allerdings erste Spuren in diesem neuen Leben. Besonders im Umgang mit ihrem dreijährigen Sohn Tom fehlt es Anja an Herzlichkeit.
Eines Nachts wird sie mit ihrem Kollegen Anton Kirmayer zu einer Familie gerufen. Die Nachbarin behauptet, dass Max, das kleine Kind der Familie Anik, stundenlang in der Kälte im Garten stehen musste. Anja wagt im entscheidenden Moment nicht nachzuschauen, ob Max Spuren körperlicher Misshandlungen zeigt. Einige Tage später verschwindet der Junge. (ARD Presse)
