Der belgische Regisseur hat sich mit der Verfilmung des 400-Seiten-Romans eine schwierige Aufgabe gestellt. Was bei der literarischen Vorlage über ganze Kapitel hinweg abgehandelt wird, konnte Delvaux nur in einzelnen Einstellungen oder symbolischen Verweisen andeuten. Der umfangreiche Stoff führte zu verschiedenen interessanten Anwendungen der Rückblende.
