In einem kleinen Dorf findet bei Richter Adam eine Verhandlung statt, die vom Gerichtsrat persönlich geleitet wird. Es geht um den zerbrochenen Krug der Witwe Rull. Diese bezichtigt Ruprecht, den Verehrer ihrer Tochter Eva, der aber alles abstreitet. Richter Adam, der eigentliche Übeltäter, bietet seine ganze Redekunst auf, um Ruprecht zu verurteilen – bis eine alte Frau mit der Perücke des Richters, die er bei dem Ausflug verloren hat, bei der Verhandlung erscheint...
