Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters kehrt eine junge Frau in das idyllische französische Dorf ihrer Kindheit zurück. Erbschaftsstreitigkeiten mit den Geschwistern und die Erinnerungen an die fehlende Liebe des Vaters belasten sie. Im Nachbarhaus trifft sie auf einen Lektor und Schriftsteller. Die beiden kennen sich schon länger, doch jetzt spüren sie eine erotische Spannung, die sich bei den folgenden Treffen verstärkt. Ihre leidenschaftlichen und körperlichen Rangeleien versetzen beide in einen Rausch, und sie decken tiefer liegende Konflikte und seelische Verwundungen auf. Das zunächst improvisierte Duell wird zunehmend zum Ritual. Jacques Doillons Film ist die intensive Choreografie einer ungewöhnlichen Liebe. (3Sat Presse)
