Brigitte wird aus dem Gefängniss entlassen, wo sie eine Strafe wegen Kindesmordes verbüsst hat. In Freiheit findet sie keine Unterkunft und keine Arbeit. Beim Umherlaufen stolpert sie über die Leiche einer im Gebirge abgestürzten Frau. Sie tauscht ihre Papiere aus. Sie wird Haushälterin bei einem verwitweten Bauern mit seinen Kindern. Der Bauer will sie heiraten, Brigitte lehnt ab, weil sie ihm ihre Vergangenheit nicht erzählen will. Der Bauer wiederholt den Antrag und verspricht keine Fragen zu stellen. Nach der Heirat taucht die ehemalige Mitgefangene Rote Jule auf, die Brigitte erpresst. Brigitte will sich ins Wasser stürzen, wird aber von Jule zurückgehalten, weil sie ihre Geldquelle nicht verlieren will. Es kommt zum Handgemenge, in das sich auch der Bauer mischt. Jule fällt dabei in den Bach und die Eheleute können glücklich zusammenleben. (Murnau-Stiftung)
