Edna Purviance was born on October 21, 1894 in Lovelock, NV, USA. She was an American Actress, known for Limelight (1952), Monsieur Verdoux (1947), A Woman of Paris (1923), Edna Purviance's first movie on record is from 1915. Edna Purviance died on January 13, 1958 in Woodland Hills, CA, USA. Her last motion picture on file dates from 1967.
Biographical Notes in German: Arbeitete in San Francisco als Sekretärin und wurde 1915 von Charlie Chaplin als Ersatz für Mabel Normand zum Film geholt. Sie trat bis 1923 in 35 seiner Filme auf und war ihm auch privat zugetan. Als ihre Beziehung einen Knacks bekam, liess Chaplin ihren von ihm produzierten Film "The Sea Gull" (1926, Regie: Josef von Sternberg), der sie zum Star machen sollte, einmotten. Obwohl ihre Karriere im Film damit beendet war, hielt Chaplin sie bis zu ihrem Tod unter Vertrag. 1947 und 1952 soll sie in Monsieur Verdoux und Limelight als Statistin aufgetreten sein, diese oft zitierten Informationen gelten nicht als gesichert.

Im Gegensatz zu Chaplin's erster Partnerin Mabel Normand war Edna Purviance ganz und gar geformt durch den grossen Komiker. Der Film "L'education de Prince", den sie 1926 in Frankreich drehte, ist der einzige ausserhalb Charlie Chaplin's Einfluss.

Edna Purviance war verheiratet mit dem Testpiloten John Patrick Squire (1899-1945) und lebte mit nach ihren RĂĽckzug aus der Filmbranche bis zu seinem Tod in San Francisco. Die letzten Jahre ihres Lebens verbrachte sie mit ihrer Schwester Myrtle (1886-1965) in Los Angeles.
